Here is the 2016 edition of this quintessential Scottish cookbook with a foreword by Catherine Brown, today's classic Scottish food writer. Every traditional Scottish recipe is here, as F. Marion MacNeil collected the definitive recipes of all the national dishes for this book. First printed in 1929, it is considered the classic Scottish cookbook. Every great Scottish chef has this book on the shelf, dog-eared and stained. 344 pages, without a single photo.
F. Marion McNeill (1885-1973) was a journalist and writer with a deep love and knowledge of Scots language, lore and traditions. Her most popular book, The Scots Kitchen, first published in 1929, gives a delightful account of eating and drinking in Scotland through the ages, with definitive recipes for all the national dishes. Her words in the foreword say it all: 'In Scotland to-day, as perhaps the world over, there is of good home cooking less and less. The old women say there is neither the variety there used to be, nor the respect for quality. But we must rest confident that out of domestic travail through which our women folk are now passing there will emerge a new delight in the home, and not least, in the kitchen.....Let us follow in the brave path of our ancestors." Edinburgh 1929.
