Hawick Balls - from the famous town of Hawick - are buttery and minty fresh boiled sweets, made from a traditional recipe of sugar, sugar syrup, butter and oil of peppermint. Totally wonderful for those with a sweet tooth. 8 oz. tin is decorated with a purple and green argyle design and a golden silhouette of Hawick horseman. According to legend, the horseman symbolizes the bravery of the young men of Hawick following the battle of Flodden Field in 1513 when the Scottish army was decimated, leaving many towns, like Hawick, defenceless. The English army plundered every town they entered, but Hawick was warned of their approach and the youths of Hawick went to meet them and fought with their hearts. Unaware of the English army's strength or large numbers, the Hawick boys were victorious and took the English flag back as their trophy. To this day, a horseman with the flag still rides the boundaries of Hawick once a year to mark the territory.
